GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES


Let's revise when to use an infinitive and when to use a gerund. If you want to see this , download and/or print as a document, just go to 'Grammar'

INFINITIVE + TO

- after adjectives
          My flat is easy to find
- to express a reason or purpose
          He is saving money to buy a new car
- after some verbs
          She's never learnt to drive
          They want to go on holiday

INFINITIVE (without to)

- after most modal and auxiliary verbs
          I can't drive
          I must hurry
- after make and let
          My parents don't let me go out much
          She always makes me laugh

GERUND

- after prepositions and phrasal verbs
          I'm very bad at remembering names
          She's given up smoking

- as the subject of a sentence
         Eating out is quite expensive here
- after some verbs
          I don't mind getting up early
          She hates playing tennis

DIFFERENT MEANING

Stop
          We stopped talking each other (we didn’t talk each other anymore)
          We stopped to have lunch (in order to have lunch)
Remember
          I remember going to that place (refers to what you did in the past)
          I must remember to send this letter (refers to the future)
Forget
          I have forgotten telling you that (refers to the past)
         Don’t forget to close the door when you leave (refers to the future)
Try
          I tried to reach the book but I couldn’t, it was on the top and I’m small
          I tried taking an aspirine but it didn’t work, my headache was terrible!
